My favorite Italian Punk band is at it again. The ladies from Milan just released their second video for the song "Try" and it is outstanding. The three piece punk band softened things up a bit from their first video, "I Wanna Live Like Joey Ramone". Their power and great sound continues to be evident in this new release and I can't wait for great things to come.
Their native tongue is Italian, but they sing in English and have made me a huge fan. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview these ladies, and like every interview before, I came away more of a fan. Hoping not to get lost in translation, their honest, fun and to the the point answers leave me wanting to ask and know more. These ladies are a mystery to me and millions of Americans, but sit back, grab a drink and enjoy getting to know a little piece of these dynamic ladies.
Thanks for doing the interview. I'm excited to know a little bit more about you three. Let's first get this question out of the way. Can you tell me how long you all have been playing music?
Psychords - A few years ago, Violet decided to start a female band taking inspiration from The Runaways. Thus, we have been playing together since 2012, but we were not just three that time... let's say the band switched from five members to three in the last few months.
Psychords - It was late 2011 when we met up and decided to work together to do a music poject: first I met up with Giò, then with Claudia and two other girls too... but the difficulties of being five girls in one room started soon. That time, I was just singing and Gio played guitar, so we decided to bring two guys into the band and keep on rocking! We spent a very intense year full of gigs, having fun by playing- especially punk and rock covers, but we wanted more. We wanted to write our own songs! So it came the decision to risk everything and try this new line-up; we worked (and are still working) hard to be what we are today. We feel we are right in the decision we made. Don't you agree? Things are going better and better, but that makes our band so strong in our friendship!
Unfortunately, I don't know how the band sounded before your most recent line up change. What I can say is I very much like this final product that you have put out to the public, and I'm expecting big things from the Psychords in the near future. This again lead to my next question. During live shows, do you have to hire outside musicians to play with you?
Psychords - Of course we are absolutely three and we do not want or need other sounds in the gigs or during recordings. That's our original power, and we think it is another one of our strengths. We are only three girls, but we play powerfully and with violence! :D
I absolutely agree with you on that point. With just the three of you, the power you bring is something. My next question comes because I’m not as cultured as I would like to be. Can you explain to me how a punk rock band from Milano, Italy sounds so good singing in English?
That's interesting. So what you're saying is, if I listen to a lot of music in Italian, then I will be able to sing really good in Italian? Just kidding, my English singing voice is bad enough, I don't need to offend any Italians by butchering their music. Is singing in English common in the music scene in Italy?
Psychords - No it's not so common, especially in the mainstream. Italian pop music is regularly written in Italian, just the way it is exported in the rest of the world too, as you might already know. Probably 'common' people don't know English very well, or simply do not prefer it. We don't care, we think English is more actual and better adapted to our music style and attitude, so for the moment, we go on our way!
I noticed in the background of one of your photos is the Confederate Flag. Have you toured or played in the United States?
Psychords - We are waiting anxiously to play in USA!! In the meantime, we are playing a lot in a club called "Alabama" in Milan which is inspired from America and the movie Animal House.
Psychords - We hope to tour in the USA soon! It will be a great experience! Most of all, we look forward to seeing Americans go crazy and having fun with our music!
That would be awesome! Just make sure the first place you come is St. Louis, Missouri. We have a great bluesy scene as well as a strong Italian section within the city. You would be welcomed with opened arms. I want to hear more from you three. Recently, you tweeted out you have some big news coming soon. Would you care to elaborate?
Psychords - Yes, we are working on our first album! We are writing a lot of new songs, you could listen to the new one "Toxic Love" in acoustic version we made for radio on our Facebook page! And we will release a new video too! According to this, we are trying to understand which of our songs our fans want to see in a video! So... which one is yours?
Honestly, my favorite song of yours is "I Wanna Live Like Joey Ramone." Since you're putting me on the spot, my next favorite you have on your Facebook page would be "Danger Girl," however, I did enjoy "Toxic Love." I listened to you on the radio with the link you provided, but unfortunately, my Italian is non-existent. What does translate is your sound, of which I'm a huge fan. With that being said, can you tell me what the overall goal of the Psychords is? Basically, what would make you say, "We finally made it?"
Psychords - One goal would be doing this for the rest of our lives, so that music is our job! Playing in a major stadium would probably make us say we finally made it.
Psychords - Haha! I find black so comfortable! We also dress in blue, purple, red... we are girls but we hate pink! I think the most colored of the group is Cla! As you can understand,we like to appear just the way we are! We don't care about making nails or other "girly" things like that, we prefer being real in a world that goes fake!
Very Nice! I did notice in some of your photos, you're not always dressed in black. Speaking of not being "girly," what are your thoughts on Rhonda Rousey?
Psychords - We don't know much about her... just that she is a girl with balls!!
Ha! Careful ladies, she is the baddest woman on the planet. We better switch the topic to food. My favorite Italian dish is Penne Medici. What's your favorite American food?
Psychords - Violet prefers ribs, Cla likes cheeseburgers and Gio goes with hamburger and French fries. Question, are the fries American since they are called French?
When France said they would not support the war, many Americans felt this was an act of betrayal, causing them to change the name to Freedom Fries. This was dumb, so most people just call them fries now. Now for the most serious question of them all. The Beatles or The Monkees?
Violet - The Beatles
Cla - The Beatles
Gio - I'm curious, here in Italy the debate is historically based on The Beatles or the Rolling Stones. By the way, I'm not prepared with The Monkees, so I choose the Stones!
Hopefully this will change your mind, either way, I appreciate the time you three took to do this interview. I am eagerly anticipating a new video and hopefully you can gather a larger following here in the states. Remember, when you embark on your American tour, make sure your first stop is St. Louis, Missouri. Thank you!
Those three members, who only share their first names, consists of Violet on voice and guitar, Gio on bass and Cla on drums. Something tells me these ladies aren't ones to mess with and take their music very seriously. I take it serious too and can't wait to see what else this trio comes out with next. If you're in the mood for some fast music, I would highly recommend giving these ladies and their fantastic sound a listen.
